Abstract

Recent research has discussed how design thinking can be included within project management practices. However, the literature still lacks studies that demonstrate practical applications of this new approach. In this sense, this paper aims to demonstrate the use of a design thinking tool within the project selection process. Through a single case study in a healthcare sector company, we reported the application experiences of a tool called Project Pitch, which was designed using design thinking concepts. In addition, a comparative analysis was also carried out between the Project Pitch and the Project Charter (PC), in order to bring contributions to project management scholars and practitioners. The case study demonstrated that Project Pitch was able to fill gaps that PC was unable to fill. However, contrary to one might think that Project Pitch could be an alternative to replace the PC, the study suggests that using both tools together can make the project selection process more effective.
