Analysis and reduction of gloss variation in plastic parts by injection
a case study in the automotive sector

The injection of polymeric parts is widely used by the productive sector, in particular, the automotive sector. However, to meet the growing consumption demands without loss of quality, careful evaluations must be adopted. One of them is the gloss analysis which, added to other defects, such as expansion, shrinkage and warping of the part, becomes important for quality control. Due to the particular nature of the production process adopted by automakers, many parts are injected in different units, being joined in other production lines. In these cases, when the gloss standard is not compatible between them, there is non-compliance, loss of production and delays in deliveries. Thus, it is essential that studies are conducted to evaluate the influence that injection parameters, as well as the type of mold, can exert on the gloss of injected parts. This work aimed to study, through the characterization of gloss, 380 parts of the seat belt cover of a passenger vehicle. For this purpose, mixtures of acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene/polycarbonate, ABS/PC (PC > 60%) were used, which were injected into non-treated and thermochemically treated molds, as well as parameters of mold temperature and holding pressure were analyzed. . The results showed that the surface treatment provided to the mold was not enough to guarantee and adjust the gloss, which was only achieved through adjustments in the temperature of the mold and the pressure of holding the injection molding machine.
