Value stream mapping in the supply sector of a steel industry

Value Stream Mapping (VSM) allows companies to eliminate their waste and direct improvements that result in increased performance. Furthermore, mapping helps establish the real need and appropriate focus of tools. Therefore, this paper aimed to evaluate the processes and activities of the steel industry to eliminate waste and reduce lead time through MFV and the principles of lean thinking. The research was carried out through on-site data collection, utilizing field research as the scientific method. The approach employed in this work was qualitative, but also quantitative due to the measurement of information, such as the timing of operations. The scope of the work was limited to the supply area, specifically order receiving. The motivation for conducting this study arises from the company's need to organize its processes, as it is new in the market and has shown growth without a well-defined process structure. Through the application of VSM and lean thinking, it was possible to review the supply area's processes in raw material receiving, simplifying and enhancing activities. The results encompass increased team performance, improved deliveries, cost reduction, employee movement reduction, and greater operational efficiency.
