Impacts of continuous improvement projects at efficiency in rail freight transport

Competition stimulates the search for improvements in the productive structure of companies. In this scenario, efficiency is a performance measure that has an effect on competitive conditions. The rail freight transport sector in Brazil has this competitive characteristic at an operational level after the 2021 legal framework, and in this sense, it is relevant to understand how operational improvement projects can impact the efficiency of rail freight transport. In this context, the Data Envelopment Analysis - DEA methodology was applied to verify the effect of operational projects for continuous improvement on the efficiency of rail freight transport. The study took as a reference the operational analysis in a large company in the Brazilian railway transport sector between 2021 and 2022. The results showed that some groups of continuous improvement operational projects have a positive effect on the efficiency of railway freight transport in the short term. and medium term. Operational projects grouped and characterized as an increase in the number of wagons per train (increase in the installed transport capacity per trip), an increase in the average load weight (increase in the quantity transported per wagon), operational improvements in maneuvering and loading/unloading setup , reduction in idleness for loading, increase in average speed between sections (from the increase in speed in permitted sections), reduction in transport time, reduction in idleness for loading, reduction in driver change time between journeys.
