Abstract

A growing trend in several technology sectors is the decentralization of product teams as a way to recruit the best talent, reduce costs and maximize the benefits of cultural diversity. The application of a process based on face-to-face collaboration such as Design Thinking presents challenges when transposed to application in distributed and remote teams. The literature presents a collection of articles related to the application of design methodology in a virtual environment, but there is a gap concerning the application of Design Thinking in remote teams intermediated by digital communication tools. This article presents a systematic literature review using the PRISMA method to identify, tabulate and analyze relevant articles related to the proposed topic. Research opportunities are suggested on different fronts of study: impacts on the design process, challenges of virtual collaboration, and consolidation of virtual reality as a tool to support product development.
