Purpose: To develop an analysis model for Production Planning and Control (PPC) of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) that operates in Make-To-Order (MTO) environments and to verify the impact of process formalization and the measurement of results on the PCP of SMEs. Methodology: Action research was conducted to validate a PCP analysis model in 3 SMEs. Improvement teams were created in each company. Techniques such as participant observation, focused interviews, and plant tour were used for the PCP analysis. Theoretical foundations: In analyzing the literature, it was possible to map three mains characteristics of SMEs operations: (1) poor Production Planning and Control, (2) informality in the execution of operations and (3) lack of measurement of results. The analysis model proposed in this work starts with an understanding that the characteristics (2) and (3) explain (1) to a great extent. Findings: Process formalization helped to spread the knowledge of the tasks and their priorities among the employees of the companies and considerably reduced the need for process improvisation. The measurement of results facilitated the identification of problems and opportunities for improvement in PCP processes. Originality/value: There are few PCP analysis models available in the specialized literature of SMEs. This paper fills this gap with the development and validation of an analysis model for this segment.Downloads
