The implementation of Lean Manufacturing (LM) implies fundamental changes in the management systems of companies. Leaders play a crucial role in establishing this lean change, as they are responsible for influencing individuals and teams in implementing strategic objectives. This article aims to empirically analyze the relationship between the behavioral orientation of leaders of different hierarchical levels and the stage of the implementation roadmap of LM, as well as to analyze the influence of the contextual variables of leadership. The proposed research method is composed of qualitative and quantitative aspects, since it combines the results of semi-structured interviews with specialists in LM and a survey with 225 leaders of different Brazilian companies who are undergoing a LM implementation. The results indicate that the context matters in relation to the orientation of the leadership style along the roadmap of lean implementation, although not all variables influence in the same extent.Downloads
