Lean production has been appearing as a production strategy that can bring good results for the footwear industry. Considering the economic importance of the footwear industry for the State of Paraiba, this paper presents an exploratory study in five relevant factories to the region in order to obtain an initial overview of the level of maturity in the adoption of lean production practices in these companies. Therefore, plant visits were arranged, in which semi-structured interviews with people involved in the implementation or management of lean practices were carried out. An assessment checklist was applied to quantify the level of implementation for each of the 12 investigated practices. The results showed that most practices has been used in the investigated plants, but with an incipient level of maturity. It was found that the isolated application of practices do not assure obtaining a lean system, which brought to light the need for a deeper investigation of lean production in the studied plants. Similarly, it was identified the need to develop a more comprehensive assessment procedure, which would be able to incorporate the systemic view of lean production.Downloads
