The need for adaptation and innovation of companies leads to coexistence of several innovation initiatives. Innovation and performance improvement initiatives are generally implemented by projects that apply specific approaches such as Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) and Design Thinking. DFSS and Design Thinking have different characteristics, but they can eventually be applied on innovation projects in the same organization. Thus, the aim of this paper is to explore the concepts of DFSS and Design Thinking and discuss the allocation decision factors between DFSS and Design Thinking teams based on a case study in a financial services company that applies both approaches. Among allocation decision factors, we highlight the solution of tame problems and wicked problems. The research demonstrates that both DFSS and Design Thinking are used for tame problems solution. This difference in the observed characteristics with the literature are due to decisions arising from the company itself to better adapt the approaches according to the current needs. Design Thinking tends to be more effective in its application with customer-focused forward-thinking, creating more innovation results.Downloads
